BACK TO THE ROOTS

This mixed case harks back to our beginnings in the Pyrenean foothills, and the surrounding area of South West France, from where our founder Eric Nairoo hails. These producers are all bona fide OGs who have stood the test of time, many of them would have featured on our very first wine list.

CLOS LAPEYRE (JEAN-BERNARD LARRIEU), JURANÇON SEC, 2023
100% Gros Manseng
An intense nose of citrus fruits, white fleshed fruits and green hazelnut. The palate is crisp with a lot of freshness, fruitiness, a touch of spice and honey and a nice note of minerality on the finish.

CHATEAU DU CEDRE, CAHORS AOC, 2022
90% Malbec, 5% Merlot, 5% Tannat
A straight and seductive wine, it expresses the richness and depth of the Malbec de Cahors from the old terraces. Young and expressive, its tannins are crunchy, it’s fresh and round. Its bouquet is marked by black fruits, spices, mint and fresh peppers, evolves and enriches gradually, giving body and length on the palate.

PRODUCTEURS PLAIMONT, MILLESIME D’EXCEPTION, 2015
80% Gros Manseng, 15% Courbu, 5% Arrufiac
The different grape varieties were harvested at night in order to preserve their aromatic qualities, and then vinified separately. On the palate; intermingling  citrus fruit and acacia flower with a hint of spice, this wine is round and long with good complexity and agreable freshness. The natural acidity of the native Pyrenean grape varieties means that additions of Sulphur can be kept to a minimum.

DOMAINE BERTHOMIEU, MADIRAN 'CONSTANCE' 2022
60% Tannat, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Pinenc (synonyms for Pinenc are Fer Servadou, and Braucol, and Mansois)
Didier called this wine ‘Constance’ because that was the name of the mistress of d’Artagnan (the leader of, and the most famous of, the three Musketeers, and whose full name was Count Charles de Batz de Castelmore d’Artagnan). He was born in the Chateau de Castelmore in the Gers region (the region where this estate is located), so, by giving his wines names connected to this region’s most famous son, d’Artagnan, Didier is placing them firmly in their place of origin. Try this wine with Rib of Beef for a match made in heaven.

PLAGEOLES, MAUZAC VERT, GAILLAC, 2023
100% Mauzac Vert, from some of the oldest vines of the family’s estate- they are sixty years old.
Bernard took the reins, to continue the work of his father Robert, an outspoken advocate for natural wines with a centuries old approach to winemaking. Robert, had researched and replanted over a dozen varieties (7 in the Mauzac family alone) indigenous to Gaillac that had all but vanished. It is now Florent, Bernard’s son, who has taken up the cause. This is a delicate, herbal and expressive white from one of the 7 Mauzac varieties. It ferments for a whole year with native yeasts and then spends a year on the fine lees.

ELIAN DA ROS, CHANTE COUCOU, COTES DU MARMANDAIS, 2021
50% Merlot – 20% Cabernet Sauvignon– 20% Malbec - 10% Syrah
Dense ruby in colour with dark hues. The nose is deep with aromas of black fruit, cassis, rose petal, violets, peppermint and cedar. The palate echoes these aromas with a beautiful aromatic freshness, silky texture and a fruity and long finish.
