Sicily has a strong sense of vinous identity. You name it, it's got it. Whilst technically part of Italy, it's much closer to Africa than Rome, and as such has a dramatically different feel. The wines here benefit from the heat and warmth of the southern sun, yet ancient native varieties retain freshness and elegance. Europe's tallest volcano also provides a perfect environment for grape growing, its patchwork of vines producing some truly world class wines. It's also an area that isn't yet saturated, it doesn't have the aristocratic rules of other key regions, and as such represents great value for the canny imbiber. This set of six wines below displays the more feminine side of winemaking in the country- Siciliana not Siciliano. So expect lighter perfumed reds like Cos's Frappatto, and the fragrant herbal medley that is Caravaglio's Occhio di Terra from Lipari. Meanwhile, Salvo Foti's Vigna di Milo Carricante is a wine so mineral it would make Kimmeridgeans blush...

Light ruby coloured in the glass, the aroma has a pretty perfume of wild flowers, red berry blossoms and herbal spices. In the mouth, flavours of raspberry, orange peel and sweet spices emerge with subtle acidity and soft tannins. There’s beautiful freshness and vibrancy in every sip.

Dark ruby red in the glass, the nose has fruity aromas of plum, blackberry, blackcurrant, with notes of tobacco, liquorice and myrtle. The palate is warm, elegant and round with a nice freshness.

I Vigneri, Vigna di Milo, North Etna, 2023, 12%

Intense straw yellow with golden hints. The nose has aromas of quince, oranges and wild flowers with notes of rosemary, thyme, toast and almonds completing the bouquet. The palate is fresh with a good finish.

Vino di Anna Palmento Bianco, 2024, 12.5% 
Insolia, Grillo, Cattarratto & Carricante
Lemon/lime in colour, this wine has attractive aromas of white flowers and citrus. The palate is crisp and dry, with a plenty of lemon and grapefruit flavours, a refreshing acidity and a sapid, mineral finish.

Bartoli, Pietranera, Zibibbo, Pantelleria, 2024, 12.5%
Zibibbo (aka Muscat of Alexandria) 
Intense pale yellow, the nose is intense and complex with aromas of citrus, flowers, sage and capers. The palate is balanced and elegant and shows a wealth of fresh fruit and great intensity of flavours with a pleasant almond note.

Yellow with golden reflections. The palate has notes of fresh fruit with yellow flesh and hints of Mediterranean flowers. The acidity is muted and the wine has a long, rich finish. The grape variety “Malvasia di Lipari” is pure, powerful, and finely expressed
