This month’s mixed case takes its inspiration from Bologna, the largest city in Emilia-Romagna. The city has been given three fitting nicknames: La Dotta (the learned), home to Italy’s oldest and largest university; La Rossa (the red), for its fiery political history; and La Grassa (the fat) for its countless culinary marvels. Our mixed case sets out to capture all three: showcasing a lesser-known grape variety or two, pouring some vino rosso, and by being gastronomic and delicious.
Dotta, Rossa, Grassa.
CATAVELA BIANCO 2024, AZIENDA AGRICOLA DENAVOLO, GIULIO ARMANI, Emilia-Romagna
Malvasia, Ortrugo, Marsanne
An exuberant wine that is pale amber in colour. Full of character, dry, tannic with aromas of yellow plums, dried flowers and more. A palate that is clean and fresh with salty acidity and good minerality.
TREBBIOLO ROSSO NV, LA STOPPA, ELENA PANTALEONI, RIVERGARO, Emilia-Romagna
Barbera, Bonarda
Bright ruby red with intense notes of red berries and floral aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with blackcurrant, tea rose and liquorice flavours and light tannins.
LAMBARO ROSSO 2025, CAMILLO DONATI, Emilia,
100% Lambrusco Maestri
A deep, brilliant crimson colour. It has soft brown-sugar and strawberry pulp aromas, with a little hint of briar. On the palate it is frizzante, with quite a robust, serious, earthy chewy-cherry fruit and a quite intense plum-skin grip. Mouth-filling and well-textured, there is plenty of racy raspberry acidity and lovely balance.
